Vocabulary: Health and lifestyle
From "sedentary lifestyle" to "life expectancy": the topic vocabulary you need for health questions in Speaking Part 3 and Writing Task 2.
Topic vocabulary
| Area | Words and collocations |
|---|---|
| Lifestyle | a sedentary lifestyle, a balanced diet, processed food, junk food, physical activity |
| Problems | obesity, heart disease, stress, sleep deprivation, a lack of exercise |
| Society | life expectancy, public health, the healthcare system, preventive measures |
| Mental health | anxiety, wellbeing, burnout, to cope with pressure |
Using them in an argument
One of the main causes of obesity is a sedentary lifestyle: many people spend most of the day sitting at a desk and then sitting in front of a screen.
Governments could improve public health by investing in preventive measures, such as cycle lanes and nutrition education, rather than only treating disease.

A note on "healthy" and "healthful"
In everyday English, healthy is used for both people and food: a healthy diet. Use that.
