Listening Part 2: Volunteer welcome at a wildlife centre
A manager welcomes new volunteers and describes the site. Practise a map-labelling task using a simple plan, plus multiple choice on duties and rules.
Map questions, step by step
- Before listening: find the starting point (usually You are here or Entrance) and the direction the speaker will face.
- Read the labelled features already on the map: paths, a lake, the car park. Speakers use them as landmarks.
- Follow the speaker's route with your pencil: "As you come in… straight ahead… on your left…"
- Answers come in order, usually moving away from the start.

Manager: Morning, everyone, and thanks for joining us. I'm Rob, the centre manager. Before you start, I'll explain where everything is, because the site is bigger than it looks.
Manager: We're standing at the main entrance, at the south end of the site. As you come in, reception is immediately on your right. That's where you'll sign in every morning and collect your volunteer badge.
Manager: On your left as you come in is the café. It's run by volunteers too, and you get free tea and coffee there during your breaks.
Manager: Now, from the entrance, the main path goes straight up the middle of the site. Halfway along, on the left, you'll see the pond. We use it for our school pond-dipping sessions.
Manager: Directly opposite the pond, on the right-hand side of the path, is the shop, which sells bird food and books. All the money goes to the animals' care.
Manager: At the far end of the main path, straight ahead of you, is the education barn, where we run talks and workshops for visitors.
Manager: And finally, the animal hospital is the building furthest from the entrance, in the north-west corner. Only trained staff work with the animals there, so please don't go in unless you're asked to.
Manager: The area in the north-east corner is where we make compost. You won't need to go there.
Manager: A few rules. For safety, please wear the boots we give you whenever you're outside. You don't need your own. And never feed the animals, even if they look hungry. Their diets are carefully controlled.
Manager: Most of you will start by helping in the education barn and the café. After about a month, if you'd like, you can train to help with feeding, which is done by staff with a volunteer assistant.
Manager: Right. Let's start with a tour.
