Writing Task 1: Paraphrase the question in your introduction
Your first Task 1 sentence should say what the chart shows, in your own words. Learn the most useful swaps, then write two introductions.
What the introduction does
One sentence (two at most) that tells the reader what the chart shows, where and when. Don't copy the question: copied words don't count towards your 150 words, and the examiner notices.
Useful swaps
| In the question | In your introduction |
|---|---|
| shows | illustrates / compares / gives information about |
| the number of | how many |
| the amount of | how much |
| the percentage of | the proportion of |
| from 2010 to 2020 | between 2010 and 2020 / over a ten-year period |
| people in the UK | British people / people living in the UK |
Introduction: The bar chart compares how many people visited three London museums in 2019.
Keep it simple
Change two or three things. Don't force strange synonyms. A natural sentence is better than a clever one.
