Numbers that trick your ears

Some numbers sound very similar, especially when people speak quickly:

  • 18 (eighteen) and 80 (eighty): listen for which part is stressed.
  • 13 / 30, 14 / 40, 15 / 50, and so on.

Speakers also correct numbers. In this conversation, the agent first mentions one flat and then corrects himself. Always listen to the end of an exchange before you write.

Times

Half past five = 5.30 · quarter to eight = 7.45 · six o'clock = 6.00 or 6 pm.

"Are you free on Thursday at half past five?" – "I finish work at half past five. Could we make it six?" – "Six is fine."
The answer is 6, not 5.30.

Agent: Good afternoon, Lakeside Lettings. Tom speaking.

Priya: Hello. I'm calling about a flat on Mill Street. I saw it on your website.

Agent: Ah yes, the one-bedroom flat at number eighteen?

Priya: I don't think so. The one I saw has two bedrooms, and it's on the second floor.

Agent: Oh, sorry. You mean number eighty-one, Mill Street. We've got two flats on that street. Yes, two bedrooms, second floor.

Priya: That's the one. How much is the rent?

Agent: It's nine hundred and fifty pounds a month. That includes water, but not electricity or the internet.

Priya: And is there a deposit?

Agent: Yes. It's the same as one month's rent.

Priya: OK. Is the flat furnished?

Agent: Partly. There's a sofa, two beds and a washing machine, but there's no dining table.

Priya: That's fine, I've got my own table. Is there anywhere to park?

Agent: There's no parking space, I'm afraid. But there's a bus stop right outside, and the station is a ten-minute walk.

Priya: Good. When is it available?

Agent: The current tenant leaves at the end of August, so it will be available from the first of September.

Priya: Lovely. Could I come and see it?

Agent: Of course. Are you free on Thursday at half past five?

Priya: I finish work at half past five. Could we make it six?

Agent: Six is fine. Can I take your name?

Priya: Priya Sharma. That's S, H, A, R, M, A.

Agent: And a contact number?

Priya: It's oh seven eight one two, four double six, three oh nine.

Agent: Thanks. Oh, one more thing. The owner doesn't allow pets in that building. You don't have any?

Priya: No pets. Just a lot of plants!

Agent: Plants are fine. See you on Thursday.
