Short texts, fast answers

With several short texts, don't read every text again for every question. Instead:

  1. Read the heading of each text and decide what it's about in two or three words (library hours, lost items…).
  2. Read a question and underline its key idea.
  3. Go straight to the text that matches that topic, then check the detail.
Question: You can get a discount if you show your student card.
Which text talks about paying? Parking and printing. Check both. Only one mentions a discount.

Paraphrase alert

The questions rarely use the same words as the notices.

  • handed in = someone found it and gave it to the office
  • given to charity = given away
  • no need to book = you don't need a reservation

Riverside Community College: notice board

A · LIBRARY: EXAM PERIOD HOURS
From 2 to 27 May the library will stay open until 10 pm, Monday to Thursday. On Fridays it will close at 6 pm as usual. Group study rooms must be booked at the front desk and can be used for a maximum of two hours. Please keep your student card with you: you will be asked to show it after 6 pm.

B · FOUND
A black umbrella, a blue water bottle and a pair of reading glasses in a brown case were handed in last week. If any of these belong to you, please collect them from Reception (ground floor, Main Building) between 9 am and 4 pm. Items not collected by the end of the month will be given to charity.

C · CAR PARK B CLOSED
Car Park B will be closed from Monday 12 May for two weeks while the surface is repaired. Staff and students can use Car Park A or the public car park on Station Road (£2 per day; show your student card for a 50% discount). The bicycle racks next to Car Park B are not affected.

D · WANT TO PRACTISE YOUR ENGLISH?
Join our free conversation club every Wednesday from 5.30 to 6.30 pm in Room 14. Each week we choose a different topic, from food to films. All levels are welcome. There's no need to book: just come along. Tea and biscuits provided!

E · COMPUTER ROOM RULES
Please do not eat or drink near the computers. Log out when you finish, because anyone can use your account if you don't. Printing costs 5p per page in black and white, or 20p in colour. Top up your printing credit at the library desk. Report any problems to IT Support on extension 2240.
